Lazy Days Cycling Trail

Lazy Days - Cycling Trail

For gentle cycling with plenty of scenery and places of interest to stop off and visit there are a number of local cycle trails in and around Peebles. Forget adrenaline charged mountain biking, these are the type of routes which call for tea and cream cakes on the way; stop-offs at curio shops or a picnic by a burn. They will increase your fitness as there are some climbs so you can have that extra cake and not feel too guilty !

Try the Start to Get Fit Route - Cademuir Circuit at 7.5 miles - a route with one steep section past Eddleston Manor which then leads to picnic benches on the summit and the opportunity to enjoy the view from Peebles to Dunslair Heights. The road then drops and the Tweed Valley opens up before you as you cross the Old Manor Bridge built in 1702. Follow the river then level out and trace the southern slopes of Cademuir Hill. The heather clad slopes of Stob Law and Hundleshope Heights contract sharply with the lush wooded valley of the Tweed. Continue on until you reach the outskirts of Peebles in Bonnington Road and back to the starting point at Kingsmeadows Road.

A longer route but still not too challenging is the Scenic Lazy Days Bike Trail - Traquair House at 13 miles. This route takes in Kailzie Gardens which are well worth a visit. Some moderate climbing is required after the gardens then the route drops back down again to Kirkburn where a long level section leading to Cardrona starts. The road again enters riverside woods and re-emerges at Old Howford for the final mile and a half to Traquair. After visiting Traquair you can follow the same route back to Peebles.
