The Library at Abbotsford

Lazy Days - Book Lover's Trail

For those of you with an interest in literature you can visit Abbotsford House near Melrose, the Borders home of Sir Walter Scott ; Bowhill, the ancestral home of the Clan Scott; Traquair House, Scotland's oldest inhabited house and mentioned in the "Waverley" novel and now a popular attraction with its own Brewery and packed calendar of events. The Grey Mare's Tail Waterfall near Moffat, mentioned in Scott's "Marmion" and The Black Bull Inn also near Moffat which Scott frequented with James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd whose Monument is located at lovely St Mary's Loch.

Thirty Nine Steps writer John Buchan has close associations with Peebles and the Tweed Valley area and there is in fact a special way marked walking route entitled The John Buchan Way which features The John Buchan Museum at Broughton, Stobo Kirk and Neidpath Castle.

In the heart of Peebles itself The Chambers Institute was gifted to the people of Peebles by the Chambers brothers of the dictionary fame. And book lover's will enjoy a visit to Whitties Book Room, a great place to spend an hour or two searching for the perfect read including many books with a local Borders influence.

For those interested in antique books Last Century Antiques and Books in Innerleithen is recommended and the town is also home to Robert Smail's Print Works which gives a fascinating insight into the history of print long before the advent of computers.

The half hour journey from Peebles to beautiful Rosslyn Chapel in Midlothian is also well worth making, the Chapel was made famous in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code and you can re-trace the code for yourself !
